Mm. What day is it, anyhow?
Thursday. And I may be off, but you ve gotta play tonight. I think we re both gonna
need another shower, too.
He chuckled. That could be fun.
You re so horny. I bit his ear and he squealed. I like it.
Good, because we d have a problem if you didn t.
Yeah?
Yeah. I plan on ravishing you ever chance I get.
I rolled him onto his back and kissed him. That s a good plan.
I thought so. He wrapped his arms around my neck and pulled me down to him.
One sixty-nine and an unusually active shower later, we finally emerged from the
apartment, clean and dressed. We d decided to head on down to the bar, since being alone
with each other seemed to lead to non-stop sex. I was sore in other places besides my jaw by
then. Eric wasn t ready to bottom yet, but he sure as hell didn t have any trouble topping.
He d fucked me so hard I didn t think I d be able to walk straight for a week. My neck bore a
big purplish-red mark where he d sunk his teeth in when he came. Sex with him was even
wilder than I d thought it would be. He left me bruised and aching and more exhilarated
than I d ever felt in my life.
Eric gave me the once-over as we headed down the stairs. Baby, he said, you look
like you just spent the whole day fucking.
Wonder why.
He grinned. I like that look.
Good, because you look the same way. Only without the bite marks. I caught his
hand as we reached the bottom of the steps and our fingers intertwined. Hellcat.
He laughed as we emerged from the storeroom into the main bar. Come on, let s get a
drink. I m buying.
Malcolm wasn t in yet, so we helped ourselves to a couple of Jack and Cokes and sat
down at the bar. Mike joined us when he arrived a few minutes later.
Hey guys, Mike said as he strolled over.
Hey, Eric said. Where s Janey?
Marco s. She switched shifts with somebody, I forget who. Mike glanced at my neck
and raised his eyebrows at me. Nice hickey.
I blushed and Eric cracked up. Don t you have to go play or something? I said, with as
much dignity as I could manage.
Eric glanced down at his watch. Shit, you re right. He jumped to his feet and wrapped
his arms around my neck. I pulled him close and we kissed.
Forgotten Song 85
Love you, I whispered in his ear.
Love you too. He brushed a stray curl out of my eyes. Such a piece.
I laughed. Go on.
He grinned at me and headed for the stage.
It was a good set, one of his best. It hadn t taken me long to figure out that his songs
reflected how he was feeling on any given day, and the ones he played that night brimmed
with happiness. He seemed to be able to crank out new songs without even trying. Songs just
flowed out of him like water.
Eric was done and the main act, a bluegrass band from Charlotte, was in the middle of
their set when Janey came in. I saw her come through the door and waved at her. She
hurried over to join Eric, Mike and me at the bar.
Hi, Janey, I said.
Hi. Look, can we go in Tamara s office? I need to tell you guys something.
Her face was pale and her gray eyes were wider than usual. I frowned. What s
wrong?
Not here, she said. Come on. Eric, Mike, you need to come too.
We looked at each other as Janey started toward the office. I know we were all
wondering what the hell had gotten her so worked up. We followed her silently, and Mike
shut the door behind us.
Okay, Janey, Mike said. What s up?
She went to Mike and wrapped both arms around his waist. He folded her in his arms
and kissed the top of her head.
He s gone, Janey said.
Eric and I looked at each other. Who? I asked.
Adam Richardson, she said. The serial killer, the one that almost got you, Eric. He s
escaped.

Chapter Fifteen
Oh, shit. I looked over at Eric. His expression radiated shock. How? What
happened?
Mike sat down and pulled Janey onto his lap. She snuggled into his arms. You know
they were transferring him from here to the maximum security prison outside Murphy,
right?
I nodded. Needless to say, Eric and I had followed the story closely ever since it broke.
We knew that the prosecution had decided to try for the death penalty. He d been held at
the medium security facility in Asheville until space opened in the overcrowded maximum
security prison. He was to be transported early that morning.
There was an accident, Janey continued. An eighteen-wheeler ran into the van he
was in. The truck driver was dead behind the wheel and they said it looked like he had a
heart attack while driving. The three guards and the driver of the van all died in the
accident, and Richardson escaped.
Eric licked his lips So, they didn t catch him again? He s loose?
Yes. The wreck happened on a pretty deserted stretch of state highway, so by the time
someone came along and called 911, he was gone. The driver that stopped didn t see him.
They have no idea where he could ve gone.
Christ. Eric leaned against me and I hugged him close.
It gets better, Janey said grimly. The story on the news said that he must ve had help
to escape. He was cuffed and shackled, and the area around where the wreck happened is
pretty rough and hilly. There s no way he could ve gotten far on his own, and the police
went over a ten mile area all around the accident with a fine-toothed comb. They even
brought out tracking dogs, but didn t find a trace of him.
They have any idea who might ve helped him? Mike asked.
