disturbed him.
Well hello, cop lady. A southern drawl got her attention and
a very handsome blue-eyed cowboy was giving her body appraisal.
She s mine, Tyler. Keaton s sleepy growl let everyone know
he was awake, and from his tone Larkin knew he was grumpy at
being in that state. Chase, you do that again and I m gonna use
you as gremlin bait.
Excuse me a minute, I m going to go fix my state of undress.
Larkin fled from the room and closed the door behind her. She
could hear the muffled talking from behind the door as she
hurriedly pulled on a pair of faded jeans and a long sleeved Mets
jersey. By the time she got back out, Keaton was sitting at the table
and his team was sitting wherever they could. Larkin walked over
him, stepping over Tyler s legs as she passed.
Guys, this is Larkin, the woman I was telling you about,
Keaton introduced her. Larkin, this big ol guy with the bald head
is Chase.
You re bigger than me, man. I m offended, Chase said.
Keaton continued as if not interrupted. That is Julia over
there. The young woman smiled at Larkin in greeting. The quiet
guy holding her hand is her husband Montague or Monty for short.
Don t let his quiet side fool you. He s a marksman and a martial
arts expert.
The man next to Julia grinned while his wife rubbed his chest
with affection. They looked like two opposites that obviously
attracted to each other. Julia with her black, elf haircut looked like
she should be performing ballets on Broadway. While Monty with
brown, short military cut hair looked like he was raised on street
fighting. He even had a scar that ran down his cheek to prove his
hard life, but his soft hazel eyes only showed kindness.
And we come to the Casanova. Over there is Tyler. Keaton
concluded his introductions.
If you ever get tired of this guy, Mr. Tyler here is ready to be
your comforter. He flashed her a flirty grin. Larkin couldn t help
but laugh at the twinkle in those blue eyes.
I m fine. Thanks for the offer, Tyler, but Keaton is all I need,
Larkin replied. It s nice to meet all of you.
Julia spoke up. So, Keats told us you killed a bull. That s cool
for your first time out.
Thanks. Larkin blushed. I couldn t shoot at it because of the
apartment building. I live by too many kids, and I didn t want to
hit Keaton. How did you guys come to hook up as a team?
Chase spoke up. Everyone here lost someone to a gremlin
attack or something else. I lost my wife to a vampire, Tyler s sister
got killed by a gremlin, Julia s dad was taken right out of her arms
by one of these things, and Monty has been hunting since a demon
took his family, and then his girl was taken by a bull gremlin. We
found each other while we here hunting and we just stuck. An
overpopulation of grems is going on so that is what we mainly
hunt now.
Larkin knew her face held disbelief when she spoke. So you re
telling me there are more things out there, like vampires, and
werewolves and& and?
Oh honey, there are things out there that you don t even want
to know about, Tyler replied. Remember when you were a kid
and you thought the boogey man was real? Well he is and there are
more than one of him.
Okay guys, you re scaring her. Let s get the gremlin nest first
and she can be weaned into the other big bads very slowly,
Keaton ordered. Hey Foxy, are you okay?
Larkin heard the concern in his voice as he pulled her onto his
lap and rubbed her back. I m fine, just a bit of a culture shock. But
I shouldn t be surprised. This is New York; half of these people are
weird.
Keaton kissed her temple. That s my girl.
Larkin felt the eyes of each of his team members assessing their
very new relationship. She could almost hear the thoughts in their
heads wondering if she was here to stay. Larkin knew she was; she
couldn t know what she knew now and see what she saw without
doing something. Plus, there was Keaton, and she wanted to see
where they could go together.
So, why do you call him Keats? She asked the question to
break the silence in the room.
He never told you about his name? Julia asked with a big
grin.
No, I never thought to ask, Larkin replied. She looked at
Keaton who was adamantly shaking his head for no one to tell his
secret. So, why Keats, guys? Fill me in.
Guys, Keaton said in a warning voice.
Pretending not to hear, Julia spoke up. Well, Keaton was
named in tribute to said dead poet and our big bad hunter here has
a fondness for poetry. His favorite is Keats.
You like poetry? Larkin asked. Keaton nodded and she
watched a blush creep up his cheeks. Aw, that is so sweet!
The wide grins of his friends made his face even redder.
Okay, as much fun as this is to watch our fearless leader
squirm in embarrassment, I m dog tired and our rooms await,
Chase said. When do we move on this nest, Keats?
The mood suddenly turned somber, the seriousness of the
